Welcome!
Welcome!
Turning Point Surgical Weight Loss Solutions is a joint project of St. Francis Health Center and Tallgrass Prairie Surgical Specialists, both of Topeka, KS. We have been performing bariatric (weight loss) surgery since 2002, and have performed over 1500 procedures. We are the region’s leader in weight loss surgery and are committed to providing the highest quality in bariatric surgical care. When comparing us to other local, regional and even international programs, we are more comprehensive, affordable, experienced, and available than our competitors.
Who are we?
Bariatric and metabolic surgeries are some of the most commonly performed surgeries in the world. These surgeries are performed for the treatment of obesity and overweight conditions, as well as for metabolic diseases such as diabetes. Many different procedures are performed. Turning Point staff are experienced at all of the mainstream procedures offered today, and are continuously updating our practices and techniques to keep up with changes in medical science.
What is Bariatric Surgery?
Indications for surgery are varied depending on age, weight, height, and other co-existing diseases. Standard accepted guidelines generally include patients between the ages of 18 and 65, with BMI's of 40 or greater, or those with BMI's of 35 to 40 with serious weight-related medical problems. (Click to Calculate your BMI) Exceptions to these guidelines are common, and are determined on an individual basis.
Am I a candidate?
We offer all all of the widely accepted procedures available in the U.S. today, including:
Realize Adjustable Gastric Band
Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy
Laparoscopic and Open Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass (RNY)
Laparoscopic and Open Biliopancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch (BPD-DS)
Revisional Bariatric Surgery
What procedures do we offer?
Health Insurance will often cover some or all of the cost of weight loss surgery. When insurance coverage is not available, we strive to make the various procedures as affordable as possible. In our program, approximate surgical fees when paid in advance of service for gastric banding are $13,500.00, and for gastric bypass, $24000.00.
What does it cost?
Financing Options
We do not offer direct financing through our program, but participate with several financing options. Care Credit, Realize, Allergan, surgeryloans.com, reliancemedicalfinance.com. Multiple studies have shown cost savings for medical care within 2-3 years of surgery. Surgical expenses are also tax-deductible as allowed by the IRS.
The first step is education. Unlike other types of surgery, an “I don’t want to know details, just fix it, Doc...” strategy doesn’t work for weight loss surgery. You must play an active part in your treatment to achieve success.
Second, there are several requirements before you can proceed with the actual surgical procedure. Patients often require psychological evaluations, medical evaluations, sleep studies, or other tests, which are varied depending on specific situations. Insurance approval, if applicable, often requires some of these to be performed before consideration.
At this time, before an office consultation may be scheduled, we require our patients to first attend a free seminar/lecture which is held the second Saturday of each month at St. Francis Auditorium. Click Here for Seminar Calendar This lecture, given by one of our surgeons, explains the details, risks, benefits, and expectations of weight loss surgery in our program. At this seminar, an information packet is provided for the patient to complete. Following completion and receipt of all information in the packet, an office appointment may then be scheduled. Unfortunately, due to abuses of this system, we require strict on-time attendance for the entire seminar. Late arrival and/or early departure will require attendance at another complete seminar before a completed packet is accepted for an office appointment. We realize that this can be somewhat difficult for some patients, and are in the process of developing other pathways for patients, including a “Webinar”.
